The historical town of Thiesi is famous for its production of Sardinian speciality cheeses such as Pecorino and Fiore Sardo. These local delicacies are made using traditional Sardinian methods. The town is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty characterised by rolling hills and deep valleys. This is a landscape that has provided plenty for farmers and shepherds since times of antiquity. Those with a love of the natural environment will rejoice at the scenery- there is the "Su Padru" and the "Sa Tanca 'e Sant' Ainzu" forests as well as the stunning shoreline of Lake Bidighinzu. The region has plenty of archaeological sites of interest, some of which date back to the Correr Age. First there are the Domus de Janas tombs at the Sa Pedraia complex which are characterised by multi-chambered tombs and embellished by sculptural representations of a pair of bull' s heads. Also of note is the 'Mandrantine' complex which is another prehistoric site. This site houses beautiful polychrome motifs and symbols making it one of the most important ancient underground burial chambers in all of Sardinia. Near the lake of Bidighinzu, along the SS 131- bis road is the "pseudo-nuraghe" of Fronte Mola, of an unusual rectangular structure, which will be soon open to the public. Recent excavations have unearthed artefacts dating from the Roman, Medieval and Renaissance periods of history, all of which help to understand how this town has come to be what it is today. The town has a dual personality in that one side of the city centre is notably Medieval and its main focus is on the circular tower of an early feudal fortification and the 15th century church of Santa Vittoria. The other side of the town is centred around the 17th century church of Sant'Antonio. Other monuments from this later period of history are the churches of Santa Croce and San Giovanni (1600's), San Sebastiano and San Filippo (1700's), the Monte Granatico(1700's) as well as a variety of municipal buildings from the 1800's and 1900's such as the City Hall and the pre-school. If you are a cheese lover, the festivities of the Madonna di Seunis are not to be missed. A Fair is held during these festivities and every type of cheese from the Meilogu region is available to sample. Furthermore all of the latest technological equipment used in cheese production will be on display.
