Since 2007 three of our videos are on permanent exhibit in New York City at The National Sports Museum. In 2009 ROMANO-ARCHIVES has provided a part of the Dada and Futurist films that were screened during the exhibition PRIMA DURANTE DOPO IL CINEMA FUTURISTA (BEFORE DURING AFTER THE FUTURIST CINEMA), performed from 15 to 23 October 2009 at La Galleria L'Agostiniana in Rome, Italy in the event "Risonanze del Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma" ("Resonances of the Rome International Film Festival"). In 2011 ROMANO-ARCHIVES signed the first contracts as footage provider with the Historic Channel of the Italian State Television RAI TV - RAI 3 La Grande Storia and with the German State Television ZDF. Also in 2011 an Austrian documentary on Hanna Reitsch, containing our exclusive material, was distributed worldwide obtaining a great public and critic success! In 2012 we started a new collaboration with the BBC. In January 2013 the BBC aired worldwide, at prime time, a documentary on Malta in WW2 realized with a large contribution of our material. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M30KC-mep7k)

THE TREE IN A TEST TUBE, a low-budget one-reeler produced by the Department of Agriculture, was a lost and forgotten film until Richard Bann discovered the existence of a copy of it in 1967. For many years, published sources stated that the film was made and distributed in 1943; Bann's later research, however, determined that Laurel and Hardy's footage was filmed on November 29, 1941, eight days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. The purpose of the short was to promote all the wonderful products made from wood, which was easily adapted into a plea for wartime conservation when the film was assembled for distribution.
Shot on 16mm Kodachrome stock, THE TREE IN A TEST TUBE is notable for being the only existing footage of Stan and Babe in color, save for some home movies from the '50s and a few short clips from the long-lost THE ROGUE SONG. Laurel and Hardy's contributions are silent, as they rummage through their belongings to find wood-based products while narrator Pete Smith makes wisecracks.

Summer 1944-Nazi propaganda complete color film. Original soundtrack. No subtitles.
In first part are shown young Nazi boys and girls living in a kind of ecological "Paradise on Earth" in the German countryside, and a weekend in Berlin, filmed by Goebbels' propaganda cameramen, pretending to show how the war and the constant bombings don't change normal life and habits of the Germans. Second part is showing Kossacks Russian cavalry troops allied with the Nazi army, (Kossacks, that were fighting followed by their women, as a reward for their bravery on the battlefields were given by the Nazis in 1944 a kind of "promised land" where they could live after the war. Many of them were given farms and lands in the Carnia. That is in Friuli, in the mountain region of east northern Italy. At the end of the war many of them were killed by Italian Partisans...). Film also shows the repairing of a damaged tank, the outstanding Schnell-Boots of the Kriegmarine and the training of paratroopers.

"Kolberg" is an example of the "pure war film". Compare with Mizoguchi's The Loyal 47 Ronin (1941-42); Sergei Eisenstein, Ivan the Terrible (1943); Lewis Seiler, Guadalcanal Diary (1943); Laurence Olivier, Henry V (1944):
it is about war (the Franco-Prussian war of 1806-07)
it shows men in combat
it is made during another war (WW2)
it is made for the war effort (propaganda).
To complete the filming, a top priority for Nazi Propaganda minister Paul Joseph Goebbels, thousands of Wermacht soldiers were taken out of the front line to partecipate in the battle sequences of "Kolberg" and quickly sent back to fight (and die) against the upcoming Red Army.
Goebbels' sense that he was living in a film of the Nazi's own making. In April 1945 as Berlin was being encircled Goebbels spoke to his staff at the Propaganda Ministry about the spirit of resistance in the film "Kolberg" and predicted that an even more important historical film would one day be made about their final hours defending the Reich:
"Gentlemen, in a hundred years' time they will be showing another fine colour film describing the terrible days we are living through. Don't you want to play a part in this film, to be brought back to life in a hundred years' time? Everybody now has a chance to choose the part which he will play in the film a hundred years hence. I can assure you that it will be a fine and elevating picture. And for the sake of this prospect it is worth standing fast. Hold out now, so that a hundred years' hence the audience does not hoot and whistle when you appear on the screen."

17 Days: The Story of Newspaper History in the Making (1945)

June 6, 1945. During the 17 days of the newspaper delivery strike in New York, the public waited in two hour lines on the streets outside of newspaper plants in order to buy the paper. Although the news could be listened to over the radio, and Mayor LaGuardia is shown reading a Dick Tracy comic strip over the radio for the "kiddies", this film primarily shows the extreme lines that people were willing to wait in at this time in history in order to receive the news in print.
Obviously financed by the newspapers themselves, the story focuses on how New Yorkers were determined to get their newspaper, no matter how long the line to get it was. Interesting how Unions were barely mentioned in the film. This fascinating movie is also a brilliant snapshot of mid 1940's New York.

Germany, late 1930ies - early 1940ies Recently surfaced 16 mm color amateur footage filmed in Karinhalle, Hermann Goering's legendary mansion 80 Km from Berlin.
All the Goering's private films were considered allegedly destroyed when he ordered the SS to blow out the entire estate with high explosive (because of the upcoming Russians), on April 20, 1945, before his departure to Berlin for the Fuhrer's last birthday party. He knew he wouldn't be back to Karinhalle no more...
These fragments are probably the only remaining color footage from Goering's private films collection.

In March 1942, Lieutenant General John L. DeWitt, head of the Western Defense Command, issued the first of 108 military proclamations that resulted in the forced removal of more than 110,000 people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast from their homes and to internment or relocation camps.
In February 1, 1943, the U.S. Government reversed its decision on Japanese Americans serving in the armed forces, and approved the formation of a Japanese American combat unit. A few days later, the government required that all internees answer loyalty questionnaires, which was used to register the Nisei (the first generation of Japanese origin to be born abroad) for the draft. Question 27 of the loyalty questionnaire asked males eligible to register for the draft, "Are you willing to serve in the armed forces of the United States on combat duty, wherever ordered?" while question 28 asked all internees, "Will you swear unqualified allegiance to the United States of America and faithfully defend the United States from any or all attack by foreign or domestic forces, and forswear any form of allegiance or obedience to the Japanese emperor, or any other foreign government, power or organization?"
The 442nd Regimental Combat Team of the United States Army, was an Asian American unit composed of mostly Japanese Americans who fought in Europe during the Second World War. The families of many of its soldiers were subject to internment. The 442nd was a self-sufficient fighting force, and fought with uncommon distinction in Italy, southern France, and Germany. The regiment became the most highly decorated military unit in the history of the United States Armed Forces, including 21 Medal of Honor recipients.

January-February 1945. Amateur film of President Roosevelt's last trip (Malta, Crimea and Middle East). This is the part with King Farouk of Egypt, King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia and Haile Selassie visiting President Roosevelt aboard his cruiser.
About King Ibn Saud, his can be considered the classic "jump over the winner's charriot", because the King of Saudi Arabia was an old friend of Hitler. He totally agreed on Hitler's politic toward the Jews. In 1938 he sent an envoy to Hitler in Berchtesgaden, asking the Fuhrer not to deport European Jews to Palestine (deportation to Palestine or Madagascar was the Nazi's early solution conceived around 1936 to solve the "Jewish issue").
We can see King Ibn Saud's envoy giving the nazi salute arriving at the Berghof in this amateur film from the Eva Braun Collection:
