In 2009 ROMANO-ARCHIVES has provided a part of the Dada and Futurist films that were screened during the exhibition PRIMA DURANTE DOPO IL CINEMA FUTURISTA (BEFORE DURING AFTER THE FUTURIST CINEMA), performed from 15 to 23 October 2009 at La Galleria L'Agostiniana in Rome, Italy in the event "Risonanze del Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma" ("Resonances of the Rome International Film Festival"). In 2011 ROMANO-ARCHIVES signed the first contracts as footage provider with the Historic Channel of the Italian State Television RAI TV - RAI 3 La Grande Storia and with the German State Television ZDF. Also in 2011 an Austrian documentary on Hanna Reitsch, containing our exclusive material, was distributed worldwide obtaining a great public and critic success! In 2012 we started a new collaboration with the BBC. In January 2013 the BBC aired worldwide, at prime time, a documentary on Malta in WW2 realized with a large contribution of our material. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M30KC-mep7k)

The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress (1944)

Documentary about the 25th and last bombing mission of a B-17, the "Memphis Belle". The "Memphis Belle" took part in a great bombing raid on sub-pens in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. On their way they encounterd heavy AA fire and interceptors.
The pilot was 24-year-old Captain Robert K. Morgan from Asheville, North Carolina who was an industrial engineer before joining the Army in 1941; the co-pilot, whom Captain Morgan insisted was "the other pilot', was 25-year-old Captain James A. Verinis from New Haven, Connecticut, who was a business administration student at the University of Connecticut before entering the service in July of 1941; Captain Vincent B. Evans, the 23-year-old bombadier was one of the two married members of the crew, and was a fleet-truck operator in his home town of Fort Worth, Texas before enlisting in January of 1942; Captain Charles B. Leighton, from East Lansing,Michigan and a chemistry student at Ohio Wesleyan before entering the service, was the navigator. The engineer and top turret gunner was Technical Sergeant Harold P.Loch, a 23-year-old stevedore from Green Bay, Wisconsin who joined the service in November of 1941; Technical Sergeant Robert J.Hanson, a construction worker from Washington state and the other married crew member, was the radio operator. The 19-year-old "baby" of the Memphis Belle crew was waist-gunner Staff Sergeant Casimer A. Nastal who was a washing machine repairman from Detroit, Michigan with two confirmed fighter kills to his credit who thought he had more "but never had time to watch whether they went down"; Staff Sergeant Cecil H. Scott, a pressman for a rubber company in Rahway, New Jersey was the ball turret gunner and, at 27, the oldest member of the crew. One of the three cameraman was First Lieutenant Harold J. Tannenbaum, from Binghamton,New York, a World War I veteran who remained in the Navy until 1927. He re-entered the service in July,1942 when he received his commission in the Army Air Force. He was killed in action,age 46, in April of 1944 while filming this movie and received a posthumous Purple Heart.

Filmed in 1944 and early 1945 but edited only in 1947, this 45 minutes well preserved and almost forgotten documentary (by the great William Wyler) is about the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter bomber and its use in missions over Italy. In the prologue outstanding shots showing various placements of 1944 late model automatic color movie-cameras on board of the planes.

August 19, 1942. Over 6,000 infantrymen, predominantly Canadian, supported by limited Royal Navy and large Royal Air Force contingents, try to land in Dieppe in the occupied France. The result is a compete failure. A total of 3,623 of the 6,086 men (almost 60%) who made it ashore result killed, wounded, or captured. The Allies also lost 96 aircraft, due both to the German flak and the Luftwaffe.
They also lost 33 landing crafts and one destroyer. Many British tanks were destroyed or captured in the operation.

The Second Happy Time (codenamed Operation Paukenschlag or Operation Drumbeat), also known among German submarine commanders as the American shooting season, was the informal name for a phase in the Second Battle of the Atlantic during which Axis submarines attacked merchant shipping along the east coast of North America. The first "Happy time" was in 1940/41.
It lasted from January 1942 to about August of that year. German submariners named it the happy time or the golden time as defence measures were weak and disorganised,[2] and the U-boats were able to inflict massive damage with little risk. During the second happy time, Axis submarines sank 609 ships totaling 3.1 million tons for the loss of only 22 U-boats. This was roughly one quarter of all shipping sunk by U-boats during the entire Second World War.

Sunday, Aug. 1, 1943. The Liberators started their long flight from airfields in Northern Africa. The low-altitude (to avoid German advanced Radar equipped line of defense) bombing of the Ploesti Oil Fields (Romania) was deemed a success, even though 54 of the 177 bombers that took part were lost, and 53 more were heavily damaged. The refineries output was greatly curtailed, and five Medals of Honor were awarded, the most for any single American military action.
We received the following email regarding this footage from Mr. G. Rossiers from the U.S.:
"I've seen the video (*) on YouTube and I'm quite sure the inflight pictures were shot by an almost unknown USAF cameraman named Jerry Joswick.
When I was young (I was 9, and now I'm 51 lol) I read a book written by him in wich he describes this raid, and precisely the images he shot while pointing his camera through the bomb trap he was surprised and terrified
seeing the Liberator flying under the one he was on board having a wing cut right at the fuselage junction and then fall like a brick...
Jerry Joswick manages to be lucky, because he was in for the Ploiesti raid, but he also was in for Schweinfurt... And then to land with the second attack wave on June 6, 1944 at Omaha beach.
For Omaha beach, as far as I record, he wrote "from far we were thinking that what we were seing above the waves in the distance was tree trunks that the Germans would have dropped in the water to damage the landing boats.
From closer, the trunks happened to be dozens of corpses floating in a sea of blood, and that far from the shore..."

Troops and an entire Panzer-Division, with German tanks and various tanks and armoured vehicles captured to the enemy in France and in Russia are taken back from the eastern front and sent to Italy. German "Big Bertha" supercannons hidden in railway tunnels are also used. At 02:37 we can see Italian Fascist volunteers from the RSI partecipating as a small group in the battle against the Americans. Exclusive German footage.

Allies flood Dutch Walcheren Island bombing the dikes at Westcapelle, Vlissingen and Veere.
Though the Allies had warned residents with pamphlets, 180 inhabitants of Westcapelle result dead. The coastal guns on Walcheren are silenced in the opening days of November and the Scheldt battle declared over; no German forces remained intact along the 64 mi (103 km) path to Antwerp. A rebellion against the Nazi occupiers of Poland's capital city happened on August 1, 1944. The Polish underground army (AK, Home Army) started the operation to liberate the city from the invaders and enable them to act as hosts to the approaching Red Army. The operation which was to last an incredible 63 days, cost the AK around 6,000 lives with some 50,000 wounded. The Red Army stopped its offensive just miles outside the city just to let the Poles and Germans fight it out amongst themselves hoping no doubt that the Germans would annihilate the anti-communist Polish Home Army, thus saving the lives of many Russian soldiers. The AK, under the direction of Polish General 'Bor' Komorowski, was forced to capitulate on October 2.

Leipzig, Germany. Aprill 13, 1945. Shots of the ruined city and corpses of suicides. Among them the Volkssturm local leader and the Deputy Mayor of Leipzig with his wife and daughter, who committed suicide in the Neues Rathaus as American troops were entering the city. The city's Mayor and his family also killed themselves.
In Leipzig G.I.s scouted the deserted Rathaus (City Hall) and reported as follow : "There's some civilian stiffs upstairs."
In his solid mayoral chair sat Oberbürgermeister Alfred Freiberg, his sightless eyes fixed on the carved ceiling. In armchairs beside him, waxen-faced in death, sat his matronly wife and bespectacled daughter. In an adjoining room Stadtkämmerer (City Treasurer) Kurt Lisso, his wife and daughter also sat in poisoned death. The rigid bodies of four Volkstürmers sprawled in other offices.
Two, it was plain, had sat across a table, sipping brandy until one had drunk enough to pick up a machine pistol, shoot his comrade and then himself.

Germany is stricken by a series of unprecedented waves of suicides during the final days of the Nazi regime. The reasons for these waves of suicides are numerous and include the effects of Nazi propaganda, the example of the suicide of Adolf Hitler, victims' attachment to the ideals of the Nazi party, and a reaction to the loss of the war and, consequently, the anticipated Allied occupation of Nazi Germany.
