A Beginners Guide to maintaining your Player Status Reports or "Statreps".
Long-term players of Imperium, like myself, tend to take it for granted that everything that a player needs to know in order to maintain his or her statrep each month is well known and largely self-explanatory, or at the very least adequately explained in the rules.
It is only when you step back and look at what a daunting prospect 95 pages of rules are and how interwoven many of the effects of actions and expenditures on a persons status report, that you begin to see that perhaps it isn't as easy as it seems.
It is for this reason that I developed the spreadsheet for players to maintain the status reports that all new players receive in their first turn.
This however, is only part of the answer, as in order to use this properly you need to know HOW to use it properly!
So here we are; the definitive guide on how to use your status report spreadsheet and how to maintain effortless status reports for your player characters, that you post at the site each month.
Firstly, a list of what you will need to proceed:
1. A current copy of the rules of Imperium and the Imperium Gazetteer.
2. The player status report provided when you joined Imperium, of, if we are now in a new year, the player status report applicable to your social class downloaded from: HERE3. The latest available status report for your player character (PC).
4. Either Microsoft Excel for Windows or Mac OS or free, opensource alternative OpenOffice.5. The latest issue of Imperium News
1. Setting up your information for the first time at the start of a new year
2. Maintaining your Player Status Report
At the beginning of each new game year, you will need to move the information contained in your old status report into a new, clean spreadsheet for the new year. After you have downloaded this from the above link proceed as follows:
a. First open the status report template file in Excel and select the 'IAN' sheet via the tabs at the bottom of the page. NB: If for some reason you are starting a new spreadsheet mid-year then set this tab to the current month.
One of the things you will notice is that certain cells are RED. DO NOT ENTER ANYTHING IN RED CELLS or you will risk overwriting a formula, spoiling the spreadsheet's automatic calculations and month to month sheet references.b. Take a copy of the latest sheet of your old player status report and fill in the following information ONLY:
1. In the cell A1 enter your player's name.2. Under Slave Prices in the cell 'K2' enter the current month's basic slave price. Do NOT alter the other slave prices as they are automatic.
3. In the section DOMESTIC STATUS: in cell D9 enter your PC's age. In cell D10, enter your Marital status and (if applicable), your wife's name, social class, attributes and dowry. In cell D11 enter any children, their ages and sexes. Then enter your player's family reputation value figure in cell F12. NB: DO NOT ENTER FIGURES IN THE SENATE AND ASSEMBLY INFLUENCE SECTIONS these are FORMULAS and they are in RED.
4. Under the ESTATE STATUS: Enter the estates you own. Enter their Locations, the Regions in which they are located, the number of Sq. Miles that you own and their respective location values (LocVal). Enter the current Regional Production Modifiers (RegProd) for each location as posted in the latest copy of Imperium News. (0.25 0.5 0.75 1.0 or 1.5). The Value and Production columns and relative totals will auto-compile from the information provided.
5. Now enter the location of your Villa Urbana and its Value. If you own either (or both) a Chariot Stables or Gladiatorial Palaestra enter the figure 100 in the relevant box.
6. Under SLAVE HOLDINGS: enter the number of Specialists, Gladiators, Guard dogs and chariot teams owned. NB: Estate slaves are automatically calculated, do not enter them. NB: DO NOT ENTER THE CURRENT SLAVE PRICES HERE.
6. Under COMMERCIAL HOLDINGS: Do the same as for estates and enter their Locations, the Regions in which they are located, the Quantity that you own and their respective location values (LocVal). Enter the current Regional Production Modifiers (RegProd) for each location as posted in the latest copy of Imperium News. (0.25 0.5 0.75 1.0 or 1.5). The Value and Production columns and relative totals will again auto-compile from the information provided. Then enter the number of small or large transport ships you own. Again the other figures will auto-compile.
7. Under CIVIL STATUS: Enter your current Civil office and previously held Civil offices in the table. Enter any existing Carried forward Civil Office Value.
8. Under MILITARY STATUS : Enter your current Military office and previously held Military offices in the table. Enter any Military Action Points you have. Lastly, enter any Military Awards that you have received (i.e.; Crowns, Spearshafts, Triumphs )etc. and their point values. The section total will be calculated automatically.
9. Under RELIGIOUS STATUS : Enter your current Religious office and previously held Religious offices (NB: Pontifex Maximus only) in the table. Enter any existing Religious Action Points you have. The section total will be calculated automatically.
10. Under CULTURAL STATUS: Enter the previous year's carried forward Cultural Contributions Value points in the BLACK cell in colum H. The rest of the section will be calculated automatically.
11. Under ECONOMIC STATUS: Assuming that you are starting a new statrep for a new year, take the figure shown in your last statrep under the heading "Treasury c/f" and enter it at the top of this section in the row marked Treasury b/f NB: Note the b/f NOT c/f. If you have an existing mortgage that you are repaying enter this in the Mortgage and Interest section. If you are a Quaestor, enter your salary of 10D in the Salary row. If this is a new month you will not have anything else to enter here at this time. You will note that the revenue from your estates and/or factories is already shown in the table, as is the Treasury c/f total. These are automatically calculated from the information you entered above.
12. Under NOTES: Enter any note such as loans owed by you and any other useful information you wish to keep, such as what office you currently hold and when it expires (if applicable). You can also list here information about your specialists. Such as name, nationality, weapon type and experience level of your gladiators or race teams. What specialists you own, such as poets, architects, cooks, spies etc. This information is not posted with the statrep .
3. Posting your monthly up-date Statrep at the Imperium game site
Now you have your status report ready (or if you have the one we sent you at start-up and have skipped the first section, you come in here). Time to make those tedious monthly entries.
Lets break down the possible changes you may have to make to your status report.

Then when you have chosen the location of your factory enter it in your status report in the following way. (NB: remember to read the rules concerning where and when you can an cannot buy factories and where such factories may cost more or less for the buyer, also what effect this may have on your character's reputation if he is a Patrician)i. b. Under ECONOMIC STATUS enter the purchase price of 100D (or 200D if buying both in the same turn) under the row marked Stable/Palaestra purchase .
c. Remember to also buy gladiators and/or a Chariot team (as described in section 2 above) these are NOT included in the stable/palaestra purchase.
d. Notify the Gladiatorial or Race Aedile by posting the purchase under the current month's Civil Reports thread at the game site.
7. Entry in Races or Games
To enter a gladiator or team in the games/races, email the respective aediles first.

If your Chariot team/Gladiator has been destroyed/killed then reduce the number of Chariot Teams/Gladiators in the SLAVE STATUS section accordingly.
8. Public Works
There are a number of different types of public act, spectacles, works of art and donations that all come under this heading. It does not matter whether the work is a donation of grain or a new bath-house the effect on your status report is the same. The following assumes public works WITHIN Rome. Works outside Rome are handled in the same way but carry lower point conversion values. See the rules for an explanation of the percentages for these donations as well as the effect of banding reductions. Fortunately the spreadsheet does this ALL for you AUTOMATICALLY.
a. Post your public work's details and the amount of money spent under the current month's Civil Office Reports thread at the game site, addressing it to the Public Works Aedile.
b. Put the total of denari spent in the Public Works row under the ECONOMIC STATUS section.
c. Add a point total equal to the amount of denari spent on the work in Public Works row under the CULTURAL CONTRIBUTION STATUS section.
9. Private Works
There are a number of different types of private act, spectacles, works of art and donations that all come under this heading. It does not matter whether the work is a dinner party or a new bath-house the effect on your status report is the same. The following assumes public works WITHIN Rome. Works outside Rome are handled in the same way but carry lower point values. Read the rules for the correct percentage for these donations.
a. Post your private work's details and money spent under the current month's Civil Reports thread at the game site, addressed to the Private Works Aedile.
b. Put the total of denari spent in the Private Works row under the ECONOMIC STATUS section.
c. Add a point total equal to HALF the amount of denari spent on the work in Private Works row under the CULTURAL CONTRIBUTION STATUS section.
10. Religious Donation or Sacrifice
Religious donations and sacrifices are ways of improving your RELIGIOUS STATUS and earning Religious Action Points that enable you to apply for religious office. Appeals to gods are different and are covered in section 11.
a. First, post your sacrifice or donation of denari to the temple of your choice at the Temple thread at the game site.
b. Enter the total denari spent in your ECONOMIC STATUS section under the row marked Temple Expenses .
c. Under your RELIGIOUS STATUS section add a number equal to HALF the denari spent on the sacrifice or donation in the row marked Religious Action Points .
11. Religious Appeals
Appeals to the gods are used to try to obtain divine assistance with a particular aim. They do NOT qualify as religious acts and so do not earn the appellant religious action points. Proceed as follows:
a. Post your appeal to the god concerned at the temple thread at the game site remembering to back the appeal with the required value of sacrifice.
b. Enter the total denari spent in your ECONOMIC STATUS section under the row marked Temple Expenses .
12. Adding CIV, MIL, REL or CUL points awarded by the Umpire.
In each monthly edition of Imperium News the umpire awards points for conspicuous effort by the players during that turn. These bonus awards are listed at the bottom of the report. Players add the points awarded in the following way:
a. Under the section marked CIVIL STATUS add the points awarded to the row marked Civil Action Points.
b. Under the section marked MILITARY STATUS add the points awarded to the row marked Military Action Points .
c. Under the section marked RELIGIOUS STATUS add the points awarded to the row marked Religious Action Points.
d. Under the section marked CULTURAL CONTRIBUTIONS STATUS add the points awarded to the row Public Works.
13. Adding Military Honours
Following a battle a lex may be proposed in the Senate to reward certain participants for their participation in the battle. The possible grades of honours are listed in the Imperium Rules. They are added in the following way:
a. Under the section MILITARY STATUS locate the row marked Military Honours .
b. In the space to the left of the number column, add the name of the honour (e.g.: Gold Crown, Lead Spearshaft etc.).
c. In the number column add the points value of the award (see the table in the rules) (e.g.: 40 for Gold crown 15 for a lead spearshaft etc.).
14. Adding Command Rating % Points
In each turn in which a military officer posts orders at the game site and in turns where battle occurs, those pc's involved are eligible for an increase in their Command Rating as outlined in section 4.11 of the rules. All officers start their careers with a command rating of 1.00 Add new points as follows:
Under the MILITARY STATUS section in the row marked Command Rating% :
a. To add the standard 0.01 points per turn change the number 1 (or 0 if the spreadsheet is new) to 1.01
b. To add the larger amounts of points awarded after a battle (e.g. 3.45 ) increase the figure 1.01 to 4.46
15. Adding Family Reputation Points
Family reputation points are always updated at the end of the year in the December turn. They occasionally may receive tweaks in the year as a result of treaties, trials or other acts that affect your player's reputation.
a. Under the section DOMESTIC STATUS add or subtract the Family reputation points awarded (or deducted) to those already contained in the row marked Family Reputation Points .
16. End of Year Archiving of Points
At the end of each game year the various action points earned throughout the year in each section (CIVIL, MILITARY, RELIGIOUS & CULTURAL ) are reduced down to 10% of their end of year total. To do this proceed as follows:
a. Take the total figure shown for Civil Action points and divide it by 10. Replace the previous figure with the new one. (e.g.: you have 154 Civil Action points; after dividing by 10 you have 15 (rounded down) Civil Action Points to carry forward to the new year.
b. Take the total figure shown for Military Action points and divide it by 10. Replace the previous figure with the new one.
c. Take the total figure shown for Religious Action points and divide it by 10. Replace the previous figure with the new one.
d. Take the total figure shown for Total Cultural Contribution Value and divide it by 10. Clear all the subtotals above and enter a new figure in the C/F Cultural Points row. (e.g. : you have a Total Cultural Contribution Value of 5,650 after dividing by 10 you have 565 C/F Cultural Points to carry forward to the new year.
17. Adding a Mortgage
To add a mortgage to one of your properties proceed as follows:
a. Email the umpire with a mortgage request, stating the property that you wish to borrow against as collateral. This must be an existing estate.
b. When you receive the mortgage offer and amount of repayments and agree to the loan you start by entering the note of which property is being held as collateral on your status report and posting the 'deal' on the Civil Office Reports thread at the game site, addressed to the Censor's Office.
c. On you status report add the new property purchased (if applicable) to the relevant ESTATE or COMMERCIAL section.
d. Enter the amount of money received in the ECONOMIC STATUS section of your status report in the row marked Loan Received.
e. Under the row Obligare Payment add the total of loan and total interest payable to the column headed Mortgage and Interest.
f. In the same row add the figure equal to your monthly repayment. (i.e.: a Mortgage of 100D at 20% interest over 1 year equals 120D repayable at 12D per month.)
18. Adding Other Expenses
Add your expenses to the relevant rows in the Expenses subheading under the ECONOMIC STATUS section.
19. Adding Other Income
Add your non estate or factory incomes under the relevant row of the Income subheading of the ECONOMIC STATUS section.
20. Changing Regional Productivity Multipliers
Each quarter the umpire rolls to see which productive regions in the game have halved, normal or increased by half revenues. The roll affects the next three months. For example; in the March copy of Imperium News the umpire will post a table of Regional Productivity for the months of April-June. The figures contained in that table do NOT affect the March status reports but start effecting incomes from the following turn.
You will notice that the new spreadsheets have a column marked REG.PROD . for you to enter your multipliers.
Proceed as follows for all estates and factories at the start of each quarter:
a. Open the gazetteer and establish which regions your properties are in.
b. In the column marked REG.PROD. in both the ESTATE STATUS and (if applicable) COMMERCIAL HOLDINGS sections enter the figure of 0.5 1.0 or 1.5 for -50% Normal and +50% respectively. The spreadsheet will auto update the resulting revenues.
21. Factoring in Riot's effect on Income
When either a bread or class riot is reported in the month's issue of Imperium News all income is halved. To do this simply I have set up a Modifier in the ECONOMIC STATUS section. Do this:
a. Under the ECONOMIC STATUS section in the subheading Income, you will notice a column marked Modifier which carries the number 1 in the Estate and Factory income rows.
b. Change this number 1 to 0.5 .
c. Remember to change it back the following month (assuming it is riot free).
22. Factoring in Rebellion and slave Revolt Effects
When Imperium News reports a rebellion or a slave revolt taking place in an area of the Imperium world, players that own estates or factories in that area become subject to the rules which reduce income in those areas by 50-100% for the duration of the revolt (see rules for precise effects). To alter the income received from these areas proceed as follows:
a. In the column marked REG.PROD. in both the ESTATE STATUS and (if applicable) COMMERCIAL HOLDINGS sections alter the figure of 0.5 1.0 or 1.5 for -50% Normal and +50% respectively to: 0.25 0.5 or 0.75 (in the case of a 50% reduction for -50% Normal and +50% areas respectively. Enter 0 for any area in which the revenue is reduced by 100% .
The spreadsheet will auto update the resulting revenues.
23. Adding Earnings from Sea Trade.
When a player engages in trade with another area, the returns are calculated by the umpire and then communicated to the player at the end of the turn. To enter your trade do as follows:
a. In the ECONOMIC STATUS section in the subheading Expenses enter the sum in denari spent in the purchase of the traded goods in the row marked Trade Goods.
b. In the same section but under the subheading Income enter the total income received in denari (as notified to you by the umpire), under the row marked Trade Income.
Now that you have finished entering all your information, the status report is ready to be posted at the site.
There are two ways to do this:
a. The lazy way
To do it this way just drag and select the cells that you need to paste from your status report. Hit 'copy' and paste the text contents into the text box of a Community Zero post in the Player Status Report thread for the relevant month. Sure your text will be all scrunched together with no tabs or neat little boxes, but what the hell it's readable.
b. The professional way (MS excel required)
To do this (and earn gratitude points from the auditor) select the contents of the status report that you wish to post. Do not include the slave cost table or the private notes. Next copy the information and paste it as VALUES ONLY into a new excel spreadsheet file. Name the file something like ABCmay195statrep and 'save as' a WEB PAGE. Open the web page file in Word (or some other html editor and copy and paste the html into your CZ post in the Player Status Report thread for the relevant month. Your diligence will be rewarded with a nice tabbed file, legible to one and all at a glance.
