Visit Lucca (30 km from the house), situated in the centre-north of Italy in Tuscany, is a town of Etruscan and Roman origins. It enjoyed an era of great splendour at the beginning of the Christian era and the first circle of walls and the anphitheatre go back to this period. Lucca became a commune in 1162. In the XIII century the centre was enriched with many architectonic beauties, such as the beautiful mosaic that portrays the Ascension of Christ in the church of S.Frediano. The peace that reigned in Lucca in the XVI and in the XVII centuries helped the building of numerous and wonderful villas, such as Villa Mansi and Villa Torrigiani, situated on the lovely hills surrounding the town. One of the characteristics is the exposure to the south and the water games, being places of entertainment and pleasure. In the centuries before, the tendency was to build the villas just outside the town for security reasons, as they were times of wars and fights. At the end of the XVIII century, Lucca was under the power of Napoleon and it became a principality under the guide of Elisa Baciocchi, the emperor's sister (you can see her Villa). She was very attentive to the needs of the town and started the projects of the aquedct and the botanic garden, that were eventually carried on by her successors. In 1817 Lucca passed under the rule of Borbone-Parma, in 1847 the town was annexed to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and around 1861 to the reign of Italy. During the time of Maria Luisa of Borbone-Parma, the present third circle of walls were converted into a public park, that you can still admire and enjoy today, and also a botanic garden was created. Lorenzo Nottolini, the architect protagonist of these works, elaborated brilliant solutions for the aqueduct and the anphitheatre, too. After the construction of the aqueduct, fountains of great artistic interest were built all over the town that even today are in perfect conditions and the water running through them still comes from the old 19th century aqueduct
