The earliest mention of which dates back to the ninth century when the thermal springs of the hill of Corsena were already renowned for their therapeutic virtues. Bagni di Lucca witnessed its first illustrious visitors during the Middle Ages with Matilde di Canossa and Federico II. During the Belle Epoque and the early twentieth century a large part of the European aristocracy gathered at the Terme di Bagni di Lucca with guests including famous writers and poets like Giusti, Monti, Carducci, Pascoli, Montaigne, Dumas, Heine, Shelley and Byron, and musicians like Puccini and Mascagni, who called it “The Switzerland of Tuscany”.
