Department
of Canelones is located in the
very south of the Country and surrounds Montevideo
department
with its
territory, lying at
the mouth of the Rio de la Plata.
It
is the most populated department, second only to the Capital's one. Its
name derives from that of the rivers
Canelon
Grande and Chico flowing through
the department's territory.

The license plate shown here
belongs to the series that was first issued in 2000: in blue on
reflective white,
it shows the departmental crest in mid-registration, screened and in
full color (see top of page for details).
Numbering is in the format AXX 999, where the first letter
identifies Canelones and the second one identifies
the vehicle type (I is for buses and J for taxis, while private
vehicles started from A); the rest is purely serial.
The size of the plate is 15x34 cm (5.9x13.4 in), which differs from
most of the Uruguayan
plates of the period.
The plate has also an embedded watermark with the letters "ROU" in
circle.

This
license plate is from the 1993-2000 series. A huge all-embossed,
non-reflective plate which measures
14x48
cm (5.5x19 in)! The full name of the municipality is shown at bottom
and the numbering format is AX 99999,
where the Department's identifier letter A is followed by a second
letter which identifies the municipality.
Serials were probably given in blocks by vehicle type. It is curious to
note that municipalities passing the 99,999
adopted a format with six numerals, moving the municipality letter
immediately below letter A, in smaller font.
