The Queen's Indian defence can be adopted when White after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 plays 3.Nf3 instead of 3.Nc3.  

In such position White is not yet able to move the pawn to e4 and Black can play slower with 3..b6 followed by Bb7 - Be7 and OO, pursuing the strategy to control the White central squares (particularly e4)  with his pieces.
