C42-43 PETROV DEFENCE

Opening Data Base                                                                  Home Page

Rather than defending the e5 pawn, Black plays symmetrically and counterattacks White's e4 pawn. The Petrov defence is very solid, and if White plays to win, Black can achieve a sharp counterplay. The downside of this defence is that White has the option to adopt unambitious and drawish variations, preventing Black to play for a win.
