After 3.Nc3 Black can choose among three main variations:

  • 3...Bb4 is the Winawer defence; by pinning the Knight Black declares his intention to counterattack, generating an unbalanced position, that is strategically complex; the Winaver is a defence suitable for those players who want to play for a win also with Black.

  • 3...Nf6 is the old classical variation in which some new ideas have improved Black counterattack after 4.Bg5.

  • 3...dxe4 is Rubinstein variation that can be adopted in reply to both 3.Nc3 and 3.Nd2.  It's a solid but passive defence that offers few complication possibility.

Here you can download a collection of recent chess games played with those variations of the French defence in which White has developed the knight in c3 (ECO codes C10-19).
