The Budapest Gambit is an Indian system that immediately realizes the attack to White's pawn center by means of 2...e5, a pawn break that implies the sacrifice of the e-pawn.  Black's idea is to take the initiative while White is engaged to defend the extra pawn. In order to contrast such strategy, White instead can quickly develop his pieces maintaining the initiative while Black is regaining the pawn..

After 3.dxe5 Ng4 (3...Ne4!? leads to the dubious Fajarowicz variation) White has three main options at his disposal: the Adler variation (4.Nf3), the Rubinstein variation (4.Bf4) and the Alechine variation (4.e4).

Among the top players, the Budapest Gambit with Black has been adopted by GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Nigel Short.
