2.c3 (Alapin) may be considered the main and most played Anti-Sicilian system. White wants to avoid granting Black a central pawns majority as (after d4 - cxd4) he can take in d4 with the c3 pawn. The drawback is related to the lack of control over the d5 and e4 squares as the Queen's Knight can't go to c3 in the early stage of the opening.  As a matter of fact Black's strategy leverages on this drawback both in case of 2...d5 and 2...Nf6.
