The Vienna Game used to be a valid alternative to the King's Gambit in the 19th century at the time of romantic chess when fashion  required sharp sacrifices and open tactical games: White increases his control over the d5 square before pushing the f pawn to f4.

Recently the Vienna game has been sometimes re-employed but with a different strategy: avoid the immediate 3.f4 to play instead the quiet 3.g3 or the aggressive 3.Bc4.  After the latter Black seems to be able to equalize but he has to beware the dangers of a violent and open play in a variation that is not yet deeply analysed.
