With 1...e5 Black wants to challenge the English opening, occupying the center.  As a matter of fact the opening is a reversed Sicilian as White has Black's position in the Sicilian but with a tempo up.  That could seem dubious for Black but, adopting lines similar to those quieter and less ambitious Anti-Sicilian systems, this defence is quite solid and absolutely playable.
