Couple cook up bright future out in the sun

A COUPLE who once ran two of Heywood town centre’s most popular eating places are now helping tourists to soak up the Sicilian sunshine.
Angelo and Gillian Greco, who ran Angelo’s Italian restaurant and nearby Cafe Roma in Market Place, have gone back to Angelo’s roots and now live in Messina, Sicily, where he works as a civil engineer.
The couple have spent all their spare time and money in the past three years renovating a classic Sicilian villa to its original splendour and they now rent it to holidaymakers from around the world.
Gillian, 45 and Angelo, 51, who have two children, met when Heywood girl Gillian went on holiday to Sicily and they married 24 years ago.They opened Angelo’s on Boxing Day 1997 and ran it for five years before leasing it to Tony Snailham and Italian-born Valerio Storto.
The two men continued to run it as an Italian-themed eatery but moved to open a new restaurant in Rochdale last year, claiming drink-fuelled problems in Heywood town centre were hitting their business.
The premises remained empty until recently, when they were taken over by lettings and estate agency Alexander James.
Gillian and Angelo paid a brief visit to Heywood last year to put the building up for sale, but said they hoped someone would continue running it as Angelo’s.
Gillian said she and Angelo love life "particularly the sunny climate" in Sicily. But she said: "We still do miss Heywood, though and all the friends we made there. Everything is going really well for us here and our holiday villa is attracting a lot of attention.
"It is an old building with lots of lovely features so we have tried to renovate it without losing any of its character or antique charm.We keep in touch with all that is happening in Heywood because we read the Advertiser online every week. We never miss."
