Palazzo Ducale - Ducal Palace - Duke's Palace and Saint George castle
The Ducal Palace really is “a town in the shape of a palace”. The royal palace consists of 34,000 square meters and it contains over 500 elaborate rooms, lanes, squares, courtyards, gardens and hanging gardens. This palace, which was the symbol of power, was and still is a wonderful show piece for great works of art. In four centuries of domination the Gonzagas had an extraordinary ability to attract here the great artists of the times such as Pisanello, Andrea Mantegna, Leon Battista Alberti, Giulio Romano, Rubens, Costa il Giovane and many others and their works in the Palace are evidence of the Gonzagas’ influence as patron of the arts. The lords of Mantua engaged the best artists in order to make their palace as prestigious as the Courts of the great European capitals. It is quite impossible to list here all the treasures that are kept in the Palace, among these the famous room painted by Mantegna, the roon painted by Pisanello, the room of the tapestries displaying Raphael’s tapestries and the rooms where Isabella d’Este lived, the rooms frescod by Giulio Romano and his school. The tour of the complex takes an hour and half at least. To visit the famous “Camera degli Sposi” or better called “Camera Picta”, painted by Andrea Mantegna, it is necessary for groups and individuals to make a reservation from mid-March to the end of October.
