The Renaissance ideal town of Sabbioneta
Mantua was not alone in experiencing the splendours and the learned sensibility of the Gonzaga family. In their feuds the cadet lines of the Gonzaga family gave birth to courts rich in works of art. Among all these feuds Sabbioneta reached the prestigious rank of Duchy in 1577 and became the Little Athens of the Renaissance thanks to a Gonzaga grown-up among the great of Europe. An itinerary through those courts tells us the story of their ruling princes. In the middle of the 16th century a village in the Po valley was turned into a capital town according to the models of old Roman towns, thanks to its Prince: Vespasiano Gonzaga Colonna (1531 – 1531). Sabbioneta boasts an almost intact Renaissance street-network, urbanistic structures and buildings from the 16th century.
CINTA MURARIA – CITY WALLS: Vespasiano protected his city not only against enemies but also against nature, the floods of the Po and Oglio rivers. 5 kilometres of almost uninterrupted walls surround Sabbioneta, making up one of the most impressive ancient defence systems in existence. For those arriving in Sabbioneta it constitutes the first point of contact: a red curtain silhouetted against the intense green of the tree-lined ramparts. Here it is possible to recognise the updated defensive technique used in the second part of the XVI. The city wall has a star-shaped frame complete with six ramparts and two gates.
TEATRO ALL’ANTICA – THEATRE: the “Teatro all’Antica” an ancient modern theatre built by Vincenzo Scamozzi between 1588 and 1590 according to the rules of classical theatres. At that time it represented a real revolutionary work, being the first example of permanent theatre in an age of strolling players. In this theatre Scamozzi invented the changing room, the double foyer one for men and the other for women. The original scene, the stage floor and the ceiling were all meant to evoke the atmosphere of Roman theatres.
PORTA VITTORIA – VITTORIA GATE: This gate, orientated towards Spanish Lombardy, is the most ancient one and was built around the year 1565. On the brick façade an inscription reminds us that Vespasiano was the founder of Sabbioneta.
PORTA IMPERIALE: It was built in 1579 and shows the coat of arms of Vespasiano as Duke. It is richer, since it is coated with white rusticated marble.
PALAZZO GIARDINO – GARDEN PALACE: The Garden Palace (Palazzo Giardino) is a thriumph of classicism. This Palace was used as a suburban villa. It is possible to visit several rooms painted with frescos.
GALLERIA“Corridor Grande” – CORRIDOR GRANDE GALLERY: The 96 metres long Gallery (Corridor Grande), one of the longest renaissance gallery, where Vespasiano decided to display his collection of classical marble statues, was built between 1583 and 1584.
PALAZZO DUCALE – DUCAL PALACE: The Ducal Palace is a symbol of the splendour of his Prince. It has got beautiful wooden ceilings. This was the official palace and residence of the Dukes of Sabbioneta. In the late 18th century a fire destroyed the whole second floor were the Duke’s apartment was located. The decorations of the Palace reflect Vespasiano’s admiration for the classical culture of Rome. Inside you can visit the Sala degli Asburgo, the Sala delle Aquile with its wooden equestrian statues and the busts of Vespasiano’s ancestors and the Sala degli Antenati.
CHIESA DELL’INCORONATA – INCORONATA CHURCH: There are four churches in Sabbioneta and Vespasione wanted to be buried in the Incoronata church. This church was built between 1586 and 1588. Vespasiano himself planned his Mausoleum inside the church where a statue sculpted in 1579 by Leone Leoni, a pupil of Michelangelo, portrays the Duke with the attitudes and features of Marcus Aurelius in Campidoglio.
CHIESA DELL’ASSUNTA – ASSUNTA CHURCH: The building of this church was begun in 1578. It contains the Holy Sacrament chapel designed by Antonio Galli Bibiena.
